The 'Dancer of Solitude' Who Continues to Captivate World-Class Choreographers

Yasuyuki Shudo, a top ballet dancer known as the "dancer of solitude," has captivated contemporary masters like Maurice Béjart and Matthew Bourne. The documentary film 'Between Today and Tomorrow' sheds light on the behind-the-scenes world of this artist, whose stage performances are celebrated for their profound artistry and captivating beauty. The film is set for release early next year.

Shudo began ballet at the age of nine. He joined the Tokyo Ballet Company at 15 and, at 19, starred in 'The Sleeping Beauty.' Since then, he has performed in numerous works by renowned choreographers worldwide, including Maurice Béjart's 'M' and 'Boléro,' as well as pieces by John Neumeier and Jiří Kylián, in addition to classical ballets like 'Swan Lake' and 'Giselle.' He is active not only in Japan but on the global stage.

Theme Music by Shiina Ringo

In the film 'Between Today and Tomorrow,' Shudo, who has rarely spoken about his inner world, shares his long-held thoughts for the first time. The film showcases performances from his 2010 stage piece 'The Garden of Time,' as well as his more experimental works 'The Man Who Fell into Blankness' and 'Apocrypha,' which marked a new direction for him. It also features his new solo dance 'Between Today and Tomorrow,' created by Shiina Ringo and choreographed by Megumi Nakamura. The documentary includes insights into Shudo's personal life from ballet dancer Yukari Saito and director of 'The Man Who Fell into Blankness' Shuji Onodera, along with precious rehearsal footage with Maurice Béjart, who passed away in 2007.

The film captures Shudo's life, dedicated with unwavering sincerity to the talent bestowed upon him. We invite you to attend the premium screening, an excellent opportunity to not only witness this cinematic exploration of his life and art but also to glimpse the man behind the dancer.
