Circulating Plastic Resources Through "Material Recycling"

In 2019, ITOCHU Corporation established a capital and business alliance with TerraCycle, Inc., headquartered in New Jersey, USA.
With a mission to "Discard the very concept of 'waste'," TerraCycle is a pioneering company that collects materials traditionally difficult to recycle and transforms them into various products.
Collaborating with major consumer goods manufacturers, retailers, cities, and facilities, TerraCycle gives new value to items that would otherwise be discarded and sent to landfills or incinerators, such as used diapers, cigarette butts, and empty product containers, by recycling them.
Recently, measures to address the issue of single-use plastics have become urgent both domestically and internationally. In Japan, approximately 14% of plastic waste is processed without being utilized, through simple incineration or landfill.
Furthermore, about 63% is currently incinerated under the guise of "thermal recycling" or "energy recovery."
Through this partnership, ITOCHU Corporation is collaborating globally with TerraCycle to promote the development of recycling businesses in Japan and Asia.
By combining TerraCycle's network of brand owners, recycling technologies, and operational expertise in recycling programs with the ITOCHU Group's extensive network, they are advancing the realization of a circular economy for sustainable development.
