Nine Times Lighter Than Previous Gift Boxes, Reducing Carbon Dioxide Emissions by 60%
Ruinart's sustainable gift packaging, "Second Skin," has launched in Japan.
Given the long-term perspective required for viticulture, Ruinart decided 10 years ago to integrate a philosophy of sustainability into every step of its winemaking craft, known as "métier." Not only is 98.7% of on-site waste recycled, but by-products from the winemaking process have also been 100% fully recycled.
Furthermore, regarding gift boxes, since 2015, lighter gift boxes weighing 50g less than before have been used, saving over 200 tons of paper at the time. Simultaneously, all forms of plastic packaging have been eliminated, reducing plastic usage by 26 tons. It is this commitment that led Ruinart to create the new "Second Skin" packaging with an even greater focus on sustainability.
However, the development of this innovative gift box required over two years of research and development. One reason was the need to create packaging that would prevent light from penetrating the transparent Ruinart bottle, which could alter the Champagne's quality.
As paper alone does not provide sufficient protection against all light, 100% recyclable natural wood fiber was used as the material. This resulted in packaging that is nine times lighter than previous gift boxes and achieves a 60% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
A further reason is the necessity to protect the Champagne's quality without degradation, including contact with water, until it is uncorked. This packaging, suitable for storage in a wine cellar, is designed to maintain the quality for three hours even when placed in an ice bucket.
The "Second Skin" is smooth like silk, yet it is a novel design. The textured surface of the packaging evokes the "Crayères," the chalk quarries from Roman times located 38 meters underground, enveloping the bottle like a second skin.
Sustainability for gifts, too. We want to give Ruinart with this unprecedentedly innovative gift packaging.
