Explosive Peat and a Shock of Spice

"Supernova" was first released in limited editions in 2009 and 2010 as Ardbeg's peatiest expression, and it was the product most eagerly awaited by fans for its return.

The current release, with its beautiful, bright gold color, retains its signature peatiness of 100ppm (a smoky, aromatic scent). By adding whisky matured in sherry casks, the flavor gains further depth, resulting in a finish that highlights the sweetness and spice of ginger and cinnamon.

With a bottle design celebrating the return of the cosmic experiment, it will be sold in the UK, USA, France, Germany, Sweden, Taiwan, Japan, and Canada starting Wednesday, September 17th.

Ardbeg is conducting a groundbreaking experiment to analyze whiskies aged in the microgravity of space alongside samples aged under Earth's gravity at a research facility in Houston, Texas, USA, in order to understand the influence of gravity on whisky maturation. The Ardbeg that had been orbiting the Earth 15 times daily for 1045 days at a speed of 7,700 meters per second has finally returned to Earth on Friday, September 12th.

Dr. Bill Lumsden, Ardbeg's Director of Distillation and Whisky Creation, commented on the experiment: "While the results of this experiment, venturing into completely unknown territory, may be a small step for humankind, they represent a giant leap for the whisky industry. Understanding how flavor changes under varying gravitational influences will shed light on the role of gravity in the maturation process, offering a fascinating opportunity that could revolutionize whisky production." A research paper is expected to be published in 2015 after all analyses are complete.
