A Golden Whisky to Celebrate the World Cup
On the Isle of Islay, the "Islay Whisky Festival," a celebration of whisky and music, is held annually from the last week of May to the first week of June. During this period, each distillery holds its "Open Day" on a rotating basis, inviting malt fans to visit. Ardbeg culminates this event, and since 2012, this day has been designated "Ardbeg Day." Ardbeg fans worldwide hold events in various locations.
This year's "Ardbeg Day" is commemorated with the limited release of "Auriverdes." The name derives from the whisky's golden hue (auri = gold) and Ardbeg's iconic green bottle (verdes = green). It is also the affectionate nickname for the Brazilian national football team, whose flag features these two colors, and who are the hosts of the World Cup.
By applying a special heating treatment to the inside of the barrel lids, a sublime flavor is achieved, adding notes of mocha coffee and creamy vanilla to the smoky Ardbeg. A complex taste unfolds on the palate, with a wonderful balance of sweetness and saltiness, featuring hints of coffee grounds, licorice, maple ham, malt, biscuits, and white pepper.
Dr. Bill Lumsden, Director of Distillation and Creation, commented on this limited edition: "When creating Auriverdes, I had a clear vision of the taste I wanted to express. I then perfected a special recipe to achieve it. The result far exceeded my expectations, creating an Ardbeg with a completely new and unique character, while still retaining the quintessential Ardbeg essence."
On Saturday, May 31st, "Ardbeg Day" will also feature an excitingPeat Football Tournamentin Japan. Attendees will have the first opportunity to sample "Auriverdes" at the venue, so be sure to check it out.
