An Event to Experience the Profound World of "Bonsai"

Bonsai is a traditional Japanese horticultural art form that allows one to appreciate natural landscapes and the passage of time through the form of a single tree in a pot, known as "ichi-bon ichi-ju" (one tree, one pot). Today, it is cherished by enthusiasts both in Japan and abroad, with the word "Bonsai" gaining international recognition. Modern styles of bonsai that fit contemporary lifestyles are also gaining popularity. The collaborative event "Feel Bonsai," aimed at promoting the allure of bonsai, will be held at Shangri-La Hotel, Tokyo.

Supervised by Seikōen, a bonsai specialty shop founded during the Kaei era of the Edo period, approximately 60 bonsai artworks will be displayed throughout the hotel's public areas, including the 28th-floor lobby and The Lobby Lounge. A special exhibition will feature original bonsai themed around Shangri-La, the legendary land of eternal youth and tranquility in the remote reaches of China, as described in James Hilton's novel "Lost Horizon," which also inspired the hotel's name.

At The Lobby Lounge, a special afternoon tea, conceived by Executive Pastry Chef Naoya Okamura, will be served to commemorate this collaboration. The menu includes a rich yet light cheesecake inspired by moss, a smooth maple syrup mousse with a striking appearance reminiscent of suiseki (viewing stones), and other visually appealing and delectable sweets. Savory options feature a variety of exquisite seasonal ingredients, such as a mulberry leaf tart with pumpkin cream cheese and a smoked salmon wrap sandwich in spinach tortilla. Guests can choose from over 20 types of tea, ranging from local blends to flavored varieties.

A workshop will also be conducted, guided by Kaori Yamada, the fifth-generation master of Seikōen bonsai. Participants will receive a lecture on enjoying bonsai and suiseki, create a miniature bonsai landscape, and then enjoy the botanical afternoon tea before taking their creation home.
