Hints for Pioneering a New Era Lie in Beauty and Craftsmanship

Challenging the World's First with Japanese Aesthetics is the debut book by Masataka Hosoo, the 12th-generation head of Hosoo, a long-established Nishijin-ori weaving house. Hosoo, a former musician, brings a unique perspective as a business leader. His company supplies Kyoto's traditional Nishijin-ori textiles for the interiors of prestigious establishments like Dior, Chanel, Hermès, Cartier boutiques, and five-star hotels such as The Ritz-Carlton. HOSOO textiles, highly regarded by top maisons, are used worldwide.
Nishijin-ori boasts a 1200-year history dating back to the Heian period. It is a traditional craft that has continuously pursued ultimate beauty, creating textiles for the Imperial family, shoguns, nobility, and temples. Founded in 1688, Hosoo has inherited the legacy of Nishijin-ori, engaging with kimono culture as a family business. However, the Nishijin-ori market has shrunk to one-tenth of its size over the past 30 years.
Yet, the unique Nishijin-ori technique of weaving gold and silver leaf into fabric, and its distinctive texture, began to gain recognition overseas. Amidst this, in 2010, Hosoo developed a revolutionary 150cm-wide loom, a first in the history of Nishijin-ori, bringing about a significant reform. This innovation marked the beginning of his challenge in the global market as an art textile.
His business and management philosophies, born from his experiences challenging the world—such as "counter-intuitive thinking that overturns common sense" and "viewing failure as part of the process toward realization"—are compelling. He also offers concrete methods for cultivating aesthetic sensibility, conveying a way of working guided by the principles of "beauty" and "craftsmanship," and the enriched future they can bring.
What is the "return on investment in beauty"? What does it mean to "create a system that actualizes imagination"? Those intrigued should pick up this book. It will undoubtedly serve as a guide not only for your work but also for contemplating your way of life.
