Yatarō Matsuura on "Why the Best Are the Best"
The latest issue, number 784, of BRUTUS, published by Magazine House, poses the question: What does "the best" mean to you?—The "Catalog of the Best for Men," created by essayist and Kurashi no Techo editor-in-chief Yatarō Matsuura and the BRUTUS editorial team, is fascinating. We asked Matsuura why he focused on the concept of "the best" this time.

Yatarō Matsuura on "What Constitutes the Best for Men"
—Why did you decide to make this feature a "Catalog of the Best for Men"?
Yatarō Matsuura“I wanted to seriously consider, with the BRUTUS editorial team, what constitutes the best for men. And I also wanted to delve deeply into what things I truly admire, desire, and can love.”
In short, a strong curiosity about the "why," "what," and "how" of the best for men was the motivation. I wanted to share that with BRUTUS readers this time.
—What are your thoughts on the release?
Matsuura“I was reminded anew of the great joy found not only in the best items, but in all things in this world: discovering the spirit within an object and aligning my own spirit with it.”
"The Unattainable" is Like Dazzling Light
—What are the benefits for a man to live surrounded by things he loves and finds comfortable?
Matsuura“As photographer Yoshihiko Ueda, with whom I had a conversation for this feature, said, I am drawn to things that I feel I cannot match. It makes me happy to have a little bit of the unattainable, or an unattainable world, in my life. It feels like living alongside someone superior to myself.”
The unattainable is like dazzling light. It’s about whether one can notice that light. Whether one can love that light. The exchange that arises from this surely makes life more vibrant.
—You had conversations with Koji Ozaki, Hanae Mori, Fuyuko Holthaus, and Yoshihiko Ueda. What did you gain and feel from this experience?
Matsuura“What moved me was that they were all incredibly sincere and put their all into everything. They all possessed a broad perspective and curiosity, feeling that nothing was unrelated to them. I admired their way of living, engaging earnestly with something new every day.”
—What does BRUTUS magazine mean to you?
Matsuura“It’s like a friend who is serene in spirit, yet possesses the passion and romance of life. As a reader, I always feel like indulging in a 'splurge' with BRUTUS – reading, enjoying, and savoring the magazine. In a way, it's a 'splurge buddy.' BRUTUS doesn't just talk about the scoreboard; it tells us plenty about what's happening on the field right now.”
