Approaching Subjects with Passion and Feminine Empathy

Wars, poverty, gender, the transitions of people's lives and cities—these are the events that female photographers convey to the world. This book features the present state of the Earth, as captured by brave and talented female National Geographic photographers, alongside their photographs and accompanying anecdotes.

The book includes works by 11 photographers: Maggie Steber, who was placed on an assassination list and repeatedly targeted during assignments; Erika Larsen, who lived with her subjects for three years; Jodi Cobb, who leverages her gender to report from places inaccessible to men; Lynsey Addario, who was kidnapped twice during assignments; and Beverly Joubert, an expert in wildlife.

Photographs that resonate deeply include images of girls in Yemen facing forced marriage before puberty (child marriage), the lives of women in Afghanistan who have lost their husbands, and the situation in Xinjiang, China, a powder keg. These are captured through a distinctly female lens.
