BOOK | Experience the world through the lens of photographer Rinko Kawauchi in "SHEETS."
BOOK | A Photobook Composed of Contact Sheets to Re-experience a Photographer's Perspective
Rinko Kawauchi's Latest Photobook, "SHEETS"
Rinko Kawauchi, a photographer active both in Japan and internationally, has released her latest photobook, "SHEETS," published by KOMINEK BOOKS in Germany. The theme this time is contact sheets, which can be seen as the photographer's inner workings. Through each individual frame captured on a single sheet, one can re-experience the photographer's perspective.

A Volume Filled Unreservedly with the Impulse and Intent of the Shoot
Rinko Kawauchi was born in Shiga Prefecture in 1972. In 2002, she received the 27th Kimura Ihei Award for her works "Utatane" and "Hanabi," and has exhibited in numerous international shows. Her international activities have been vigorous, including a solo exhibition at the Cartier Foundation in Paris in 2005.
One of the fruits of her international endeavors is the photobook "SHEETS," published by Germany's KOMINEK BOOKS. KOMINEK BOOKS is an independent publishing label run by Polish photographer Michał Komecki. Established in 2007, it began its full-scale publishing operations in 2010. It has since produced photobooks for leading contemporary photographers such as Viviane Sassen and Alec Soth, establishing itself as a highly capable publisher.
This work, "SHEETS," features contact sheets, which are the state of a photograph before it is released to the world, and are filled unreservedly with the impulse and intent behind the shoot. Kawauchi herself selected and reconfigured contact sheets based on her previous works.
Upon opening the pages, one is greeted by a unique layout: full-scale contact sheets are presented, with the featured images then revealed in a gatefold spread. By following the contact sheets taken with a 6x6 film camera, we can closely observe Kawauchi's act of "selecting photographs," an action as important to her as the act of shooting itself.
From what perspective did Rinko Kawauchi select which works? This volume, filled with clues to that question, is like a private journal, much like its binding suggests.
