Japan's First Guide to Portland: 'TRUE PORTLAND'

Portland, Oregon, known as a "green and people-friendly city," has been selected as America's number one city to live in. On January 25th, Media Surf Communications released "TRUE PORTLAND the unofficial guide for creative people 創造都市ポートランドガイド Annual 2014," the first guidebook in Japan dedicated to this city.

Text by YANAKA Tomomi

Contributors Include Key Figures from Portland's Culture Scene

This guidebook offers a deeper understanding of Portland, a city that has garnered attention in recent years for its urban development, community building initiatives by local governments, and its organic food farmers' markets, and has been featured in various media.

In Portland, with a population of about 600,000, some 400 people are drawn to its charm and move there every week. The city, home to many creators, is attracting global attention for its next-generation lifestyle that values sustainable, high-quality living within one's means.

What is it that captivates so many people? Could the factors that allow people to live vibrant, creative lives lie beyond a well-established system? With this question in mind, and with the cooperation of local residents, the book is filled with keywords for experiencing the city like a local.

Opening the pages reveals over 420 spots introduced through verbs like "EAT," "LISTEN," and "MAKE." Key figures in each scene offer insights into various cultures, from "third wave coffee" – the meticulous brewing of high-quality, freshly roasted beans – and "microbreweries" producing craft beer and spirits, to DIY culture and tattoos. The book also features spots popular among locals.

Published annually to reflect the city's evolving landscape, this book serves not only as a travel guide but also as a source of inspiration for a fresh lifestyle.
