Mars orbits just outside Earth. It is considered "the planet most similar to Earth" due to its rare seasonal changes within the solar system. Its high-resolution camera, HiRISE, captures Mars' complex and varied terrain, sending the images back to Earth. German-born photographer Thomas Ruff is an avid lover of celestial bodies, so much so that he seriously considered becoming an astronaut. While known for his large-format portrait photography, he reached a major turning point in 1989: he stopped taking photographs. The catalyst was astrophotography. He traveled to the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Chile's Andes region. British photographer Paul Graham, with a career spanning over 30 years, has witnessed the end of an era.
