Part 8: "Space Odyssey ~21st Century, A Journey to Space~"

The books that shape our lives can appear in an instant. We introduce three photography and art books selected by Atsushi Hamanaka of twelvebooks, a book hunter who travels the world in search of such special finds. Beautiful to look at, to touch, to display. Welcome to the world of tangible reading.

Space, the final frontier. With advancements in science and technology, it may seem like we've never been closer to the cosmos. Yet, for most, space travel remains a distant dream. The "souvenirs" brought back by astronauts are our only connection. This is precisely what sparks our imagination. What kind of world lies beyond the sky? Here, we present three books that illuminate this unknown realm.

Revealing "Everything" About Mars

twelvebooks | Dec. 2013 04

Mars orbits just outside Earth. It is considered "the planet most similar to Earth" due to its rare seasonal changes within the solar system. Many aspects remain unexplained, leading to numerous probes being sent to Mars. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), launched in 2005, is one such mission. Its high-resolution camera, HiRISE, captures Mars' complex and varied terrain, sending the images back to Earth. "MARS" is a collection of these precious images, presented exactly as seen through the eyes of HiRISE. With this book in hand, you can see "everything" about Mars.

A Man's Romance Captured

twelvebooks | Dec. 2013 20

German-born photographer Thomas Ruff is an avid lover of celestial bodies, so much so that he seriously considered becoming an astronaut. While known for his large-format portrait photography, he reached a major turning point in 1989: he stopped taking photographs. The catalyst was astrophotography. Frustrated by his inability to achieve satisfactory results despite repeatedly shooting the night sky, he began to focus on finding existing images. He traveled to the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Chile's Andes region. "Sterne" is a collection of prints made from astronomical record photographs taken with the observatory's telescopes, selected for their aesthetic appeal. This book presents those images.

A Microcosm Within Film?

twelvebooks | Dec. 2013 27

British photographer Paul Graham, with a career spanning over 30 years, has witnessed the end of an era. With the proliferation of digital cameras, film, the "greatest recording medium of the 20th century," has faded into obscurity. Familiar film types like "Kodacolor," "Fujicolor," "Tri-X," "Kodachrome," and "Ektachrome," once essential to photographers, are now in decline. While organizing his past works for an upcoming exhibition, Graham became captivated by the very films that had supported his creative process. He meticulously enlarged and scanned each one, as if cherishing something precious and fleeting. What emerged was a "microcosm" within the film, unlike anything he had seen before. Is this a memorial, or a new possibility? We invite you to discover it for yourself.
