The new exhibition "Throw-ups" by London-based artist James Jarvis is being held at the NANZUKA gallery in Shibuya until Saturday, August 24, 2019.

Born in 1970, James Jarvis is an artist, illustrator, and character designer based in London, UK. He excels at a style that combines manga-esque illustrations with original character figures, and his work is widely recognized in Japan. From 2003 to 2013, he ran his own brand "Amos" with Russell Waterman, co-founder of "SILAS." In recent years, he has collaborated with numerous global brands such as NIKE, UNIQLO, and IKEA.

This exhibition, "Throw-ups," his first in Japan in four years, features not only Jarvis's daily drawings but also new spray paintings, laser-cut wooden relief works, flat pieces using colored acrylic panels, and bronze sculptures. Jarvis says, "Drawing is like breathing for me; it feels like something I have to do." His characters, drawn against a backdrop of diverse interests ranging from philosophical thought, various languages, history, and social issues to popular culture, art, architecture, and skateboarding, are extremely simplified yet remarkably eloquent, comical, and ironic.
