Enjoy Paintings of Spring Flowers and Cherry Blossoms in Bloom

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, is ideally located near renowned cherry blossom viewing spots such as the Imperial Palace, Chidorigafuchi, and Kitanomaru Park. Its prime location makes it perfect for a leisurely stroll. To celebrate the season, the museum will hold "Spring Festival at the Museum" from Tuesday, March 23 to Sunday, April 11, 2021, timed with the blooming of the cherry blossoms.
Highlights include approximately 20 floral artworks on display in the "MOMAT Collection" exhibition, shown only once a year during this season. Among them are Tamaki Atomi's "Scroll of Cherry Blossoms," which depicts over 40 rare varieties of cherry blossoms including weeping cherry trees, and important cultural property Gyokudō Kawai's "Departing Spring." The exhibition also features cherry blossom works from the "Shin-hanga" (New Prints) movement by artists like Hasui Kawase, and textile art such as Toshiko Kamaga's "Pattern-Dyed Kimono: Spring Fields." In total, around 200 selected works across three floors, including Japanese paintings, Western paintings, and international art, will be exhibited. Visitors can also admire masterpieces from the museum's collection by artists like Ryusei Kishida, Sotaro Yasui, and Cézanne.

During the event period, two special exhibitions will also be held concurrently: "Suspicious Paintings Exhibition" and "The Illusory Lens: A Small Exhibition from the MOMAT Collection." The "Suspicious Paintings Exhibition" showcases works created during a period of transformation in Japanese art, influenced by Western styles in the Meiji era. Paintings, prints, and illustrations from magazines and books produced from the late Edo period to the early Showa period will be displayed, exploring "suspicious" expressions—those that deviate from mere beauty, encompassing the decadent, alluring, grotesque, and erotic. Meanwhile, "The Illusory Lens" delves into another facet of photography, exploring the fantastical worlds conjured by the "mechanical eye" of the camera combined with the photographer's imagination.
