Peter Doig's First Solo Exhibition in Japan: Romantic and Mysterious Landscapes
Peter Doig was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1959. He grew up in Trinidad and Tobago and Canada, and in 1990, he received his Master of Arts from the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. Nominated for the Turner Prize in 1994, he moved his base to Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, in 2002 and has since held solo exhibitions at world-renowned museums such as the Tate in London, the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris, and the Scottish National Gallery.
His romantic and mysterious landscapes have had a profound influence on artists of his own and subsequent generations, leading to his reputation as "the painter's painter." At first glance, Peter Doig's works might seem fantastical, depicting scenes born solely from individual imagination. However, they are constructed from elements such as the compositions and motifs of modern painters like Gauguin, Van Gogh, Matisse, and Munch, cinematic scenes, advertising graphics, and landscapes from Canada and Trinidad and Tobago where he has lived.
Composed of diverse imagery, his works evoke a sense of familiarity, stimulating the viewer's imagination. Furthermore, motifs such as canoes and figures, depicted in various forms and colors across different pieces, remind viewers of the connections between works, creating a sensation that extends beyond a single painting. This exhibition features several large-scale works, including some exceeding three meters in width. It is a rare opportunity to experience their scale, which cannot be conveyed through print or smartphones.
