ART | An Epic Journey Between Reality and Fiction
Vasantha Yogananthan, Reinterpreting Classics for Modern Times, Holds First Solo Exhibition in Japan: "A Myth of Two Souls"
From Tuesday, September 3 to Sunday, September 29, 2019, Chanel Nexus Hall in Ginza, Tokyo, will host the first solo exhibition in Japan by French photographer Vasantha Yogananthan, titled "A Myth of Two Souls."

An Enduring Classic, Reimagined for the Present
Vasantha Yogananthan, winner of the Magnum Photo Awards in 2015 and the ICP (International Center of Photography) Infinity Award for Emerging Photographer of the Year in 2017, is a photographer of considerable acclaim. This marks his first exhibition in Japan. His work explores the space between documentary and fiction.
The exhibition "A Myth of Two Souls" is inspired by the "Ramayana," compiled around 300 BCE by the poet Valmiki. The "Ramayana" is one of the most sacred texts of Hinduism and, along with the "Mahabharata," one of India's two great epics. It has been retold and reinterpreted countless times over the centuries and remains a widely beloved story in India and Southeast Asia, not only in written form but also through various media such as theater and television dramas.
Beginning in 2013, Yogananthan traveled across India, from north to south, tracing the narrative path of the "Ramayana." He drew inspiration from the enduring influence of the epic on the daily lives of contemporary Indians, which led him to capture these photographs. The series proposes a modern reinterpretation of this classic work, centered on the concept of a journey through time and space. This exhibition, a modern rendition of an enduring classic that has been rewritten and reinterpreted countless times over centuries, invites viewers on an epic voyage where the boundaries between reality and fiction blur.
