Takashi Murakami's First Solo Exhibition at Perrotin Tokyo, 'Superflat Doraemon,' Opens
Takashi Murakami is holding his first solo exhibition at Perrotin Tokyo, titled 'Superflat Doraemon.' The exhibition runs until Saturday, January 25, 2020.
New Works Unveiled: Takashi Murakami Reinterprets 'Doraemon' on its 50th Anniversary
Born in 1962, Takashi Murakami is an artist currently based in Tokyo. His exhibitions at institutions such as the Mori Art Museum, Yokohama Museum of Art, Astrup Fearnley Museet, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, have each set records for the highest number of visitors, cementing his status as a globally recognized figure.
At the core of Murakami's practice lie Japanese art forms, including the works of Edo-period 'eccentric' painters like Ito Jakuchu and Soga Shohaku, the Rinpa school artists such as Tawaraya Sotatsu and Ogata Korin, and ukiyo-e prints, alongside Japan's distinctively developed otaku culture found in manga and anime. The concept and art movement Murakami coined to describe his contemporary works, which are based on the two-dimensional expressions inherited from Japanese art and otaku culture, is 'Superflat.'
Under this 'Superflat' banner, Perrotin Tokyo in Roppongi, Tokyo, will host the 'Superflat Doraemon' exhibition, showcasing new works that reinterpret the world of Fujiko F. Fujio's iconic 'Doraemon,' which celebrates its 50th serialization anniversary in 2020, within an art historical context.
Murakami's collaboration with 'Doraemon' began in 2002 for the exhibition 'THE Doraemon Exhibition: Please commission your Doraemon (Fujiko F. Fujio),' where he created a piece depicting Doraemon characters flying on bamboo copters over a field of flowers with Murakami's own characters, 'Kaikai' and 'Kiki.' This was followed by 'THE Doraemon Exhibition TOKYO 2017,' where he produced a major work featuring 'Doraemon' characters and Fujiko F. Fujio within his signature 'flower' motif. Murakami commented on the latter piece, stating, 'The highlight of this work is how to bring closer together my 'flowers,' which are the grammar of contemporary art, and the manga grammar found in Doraemon.'
This exhibition features new works, including shaped canvas pieces, where Takashi Murakami has newly integrated the world of 'Doraemon' into art history. Don't miss this collection of works where Murakami reinterprets the world of manga.
