Creating Works Under the Theme 'Le fil rouge' (Red Thread)
'Le fil rouge,' meaning 'red thread' in French, is an exhibition organized by Espace Louis Vuitton, inviting eight internationally active contemporary artists to three cities: Munich, Paris, and Tokyo. In this exhibition, contemporary artists create their unique worlds using thread as their primary medium.
Each Espace space shares the common theme of 'Le fil rouge,' exhibiting works by four of the eight artists. The exhibition is designed to foster an intriguing dialogue connecting the three venues by referencing artists and works presented at the other two locations.
In Munich, Kada Amer, Tracey Emin, and Michael Riedel presented works based on embroidery. Once considered a craft of women and not highly regarded as art, embroidery is now incorporated as an artistic expression by contemporary artists. Following this, Paris features site-specific installations by Isa Melsheimer, Fred Sandback, and Chiharu Shiota.
And finally, in Tokyo, concluding this project, Tatiana Trouvé's installation works using thread that blurs various boundaries are on display. Furthermore, following Munich, Kada Amer exhibits works incorporating pornography and thread, while Michael Riedel presents art combining painting and sewing. Additionally, the video work 'The Thread,' created by Belgian artist Hans Op de Beeck in line with the theme, will be screened concurrently across all three venues.
Thread, used in everything from leather goods to ready-to-wear, is arguably integral to Louis Vuitton's identity. This thread inspires artists' boundless creative expression and exploration, elevating it to art in various forms.
