Capturing the Faces of Men Who Defined Japan from the Late 1990s to the Early 2000s

"Araki's Naked Faces," a popular series by renowned Japanese photographer Araki, also known as Araki, began as a cover story feature for the monthly magazine "da Vinci." Since its start in 1997, it has continued for 17 years, capturing portraits of the era's most prominent figures.

The exhibition brings together the "naked faces" of over 200 men from diverse fields, including writers, actors, film directors, athletes, and musicians, ranging in age from 14 to 95, beginning with the inaugural subject, Beat Takeshi. It will be held at Omotesando Hills from April 24 (Fri) to May 6 (Wed, holiday).

Throughout this series, Araki has maintained his commitment to shooting on film using an Asahi Pentax 6x7 camera, even in today's digital age.

This exhibition will feature a comprehensive display of all 207 analog prints, each hand-developed on photographic paper. Additionally, large-format photographs of Beat Takeshi from 1997 and Takeshi Kitano from 2014 will be exhibited, along with footage of the photo session between Araki and Kitano, which took place at the end of last year for this project.

In addition to the eponymous photobook published by KADOKAWA Media Factory on March 25, the exhibition will also offer related books, DVDs, postcards, and other merchandise. Furthermore, talk events and autograph sessions with special guests are planned.

This exhibition, which not only represents the culmination of Nobuyoshi Araki's photographic career and portrait work but also serves as a valuable historical record of the men who symbolized Japan from the late 1990s to the early 2000s, is not to be missed.
