Documenting Traditional Culture and Changing Lifestyles Under Western Influence
Bischof visited Japan during the occupation from 1951 to 1952, spending approximately ten months on assignment as a photojournalist.
Born in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1916, Bischof initially aspired to be a painter. However, after studying photography at art school, he began working in studio and fashion photography. A turning point came with his coverage of World War II, leading him to transition into photojournalism. He went on to publish numerous masterpieces in European and American magazines, earning international acclaim.
In 1949, he joined the prestigious international photography collective Magnum Photos. His involvement in Magnum's "Generation X" project, which focused on young people around the world turning twenty, led him to Japan during its occupation.
Beyond his work under GHQ occupation, Bischof also covered Okinawa and the Korean War from his base in Japan. He was a photographer of remarkable energy, tragically dying at a young age in 1954 when his jeep fell during an assignment in the Peruvian Andes.
Upon his arrival, Bischof developed a profound interest in Japanese society during its post-war reconstruction. He meticulously documented traditional culture and performing arts such as Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, tea ceremony, and Bunraku, as well as the lives of people undergoing change influenced by American culture.
During his stay in Japan, Bischof formed a close friendship with Ihei Kimura, described as being "like brothers," sharing deep conversations about their photographic philosophies. Kimura reflected in his book "My Leica" that Bischof's "numerous published works greatly contributed to the Japanese photography world."
As we approach the 100th anniversary of Showa and the 80th year since the end of the war, Bischof's photographs, taken during the unique era of occupation, promise to quietly evoke memories of "the Japan that wasn't Japan back then."
It is compelling to witness these invaluable records that capture the moment post-war Japan began to reclaim its identity.
