A Life with Camera

'A Life with Camera' is a comprehensive collection of works by Yoshihiko Ueda, known for his portraits of celebrities, acclaimed advertising photography, and images capturing his encounters with nature. Ueda, who stepped into the role of curator with the opening of Gallery 916 in 2012, will showcase carefully selected pieces from his portfolio, spanning from when he was 24 years old to the present.

This exhibition features approximately 300 carefully selected photographs and two video works, covering his career from the early 1980s to his latest works shot last year. The collection includes portrait series of figures like Andy Warhol and Takeshi Kitano, images used in the wildly popular Suntory Oolong Tea advertisements, and intimate glimpses of family life, showcasing a wide range of his work. Due to the extensive number of pieces, there will be several rotations of the exhibited works throughout the exhibition period.

To coincide with the exhibition, a photobook titled 'A Life with Camera' has also been published. It represents the culmination of 35 years of Ueda's journey, navigating his career as a leading advertising photographer while engaging with photography daily as an artist and a father. The book includes a preface by Hans Ulrich Obrist, the renowned curator and art historian.

Yoshihiko Ueda's fleeting miracles captured through his lens. A gentle atmosphere that seems to convey the very texture of light, and at times, a powerful intensity that draws the viewer in with startling force. What do these vibrant works, crafted over a lifetime by a single photographer, communicate to us?
