Works That Present Essence by Viewing the World with an Equal Eye
Born in Mexico in 1962, Gabriel Orozco has become an indispensable figure in contemporary art of the 1990s. In recent years, he has held large-scale solo exhibitions that have toured the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and Tate Modern in the UK. However, opportunities for exhibitions in Asia have been limited, making this exhibition his long-awaited first solo show in Japan.
The most distinctive feature of his work is the method of prompting new ways of thinking in viewers by intervening in familiar, everyday objects. He discovers attractive forms within casual objects and scenes discarded on the street, then transforms their shapes into artworks. This reinterpretation, akin to using stones and sand to represent water flow in a Japanese garden, offers viewers the joy of deciphering meaning.
His universal sculptures, devoid of regional or political connotations, and his photographs, resembling casual snapshots, have had a significant influence on emerging Japanese artists working today.
The venue displays Orozco's works from his early period to recent creations. Alongside his representative work 'La DS,' created by joining cut sections of a car, and his latest canvas pieces, a peculiar ping-pong table with a pond in the center is available for visitors to play on.
Orozco views the world with an equal eye, unburdened by hierarchy, whether dealing with artificial or natural objects, and focuses on things that ordinary people overlook to create his art. His works, which discern the essence of the universe's constant flux and circulation with a playful spirit, are likely to resonate deeply with the Japanese sensibility.
