Artistic City x Takashi Homma

Chandigarh, located in the northern Indian state of Punjab with views of the Himalayas, is known for its urban planning undertaken from scratch in the 1950s by Le Corbusier, the "father of modern architecture." Buildings designed by Le Corbusier himself remain in the city, where people's lives, beautiful streetscapes, and architecture continue to blend harmoniously.

Currently on display at CoSTUME NATIONAL are works by Takashi Homma, a leading Japanese photographer, capturing this legendary city. The exhibition presents three iconic landscapes from the Capitol Complex, the central administrative area, through photographs and video.

At the High Court, also a work by Le Corbusier, Homma examines the "brise-soleil"—giant pillars painted red, yellow, and green to block the harsh Indian summer sun—through six photographs. A video work is also being screened, capturing staff in legal attire moving to and from the brise-soleil during breaks or transit.

Also featured are video works capturing a day at the bus terminal, designed by Pierre Jeanneret, Le Corbusier's cousin, who was largely responsible for Chandigarh's urban planning.

Chandigarh, a city that pursued a completely new modernism and functional beauty unlike anything seen in India before. Takashi Homma captures from various angles the daily lives of people and this groundbreaking city, which is like a work of art in its entirety and will be passed down through generations. What kind of works emerge when these two artistic entities intersect? We invite you to witness it.
