Exhibition Featuring Works Centered on Black, the Brand's Founding Theme Color
Costume National was founded in Milan in 1986 by designer Ennio Capasa, along with his brother Carlo. Its minimal yet chic designs have garnered support from celebrities and fashion icons worldwide. In Japan, the brand opened its first complex-style flagship store in Minami-Aoyama in September 2011, featuring a shop, bar, and gallery. It has consistently presented Ennio Capasa's worldview and proposed a lifestyle.
Before founding the brand, Ennio Capasa stayed in Tokyo as an assistant designer to Yohji Yamamoto. During that time, he was deeply inspired by Japanese traditional culture, such as the beauty expressed solely through shades of black and white in ink wash paintings, a hallmark of Higashiyama culture. It is no exaggeration to say that Japanese culture played a significant role in his current cool, intellectual creations and his original yet meticulously calculated beautiful designs.
This art collection exhibition features works from Capasa's collection that have inspired and innovated his creative activities, focusing on black, which was the brand's theme color in its early days. Just as ink wash paintings convey various colors and expressions through shades, gradations, and brushstrokes alone, the gallery space is treated as a canvas, with all the exhibited works coming together to create the space.
In its early years, Costume National built its brand world around black. This is a special opportunity for us to retrace the creative thought process of Ennio Capasa, who has drawn daily inspiration from art.
