Open House on Saturday, November 1st: Public Welcome

Known as a "music school that travels the world," RBMA arrives in Asia for the first time in its 16-year history. Talented musicians from across the globe gather here, sharing ideas and experiences, honing their skills for approximately one month from Sunday, October 12th. The RBMA headquarters in Shibuya, serving as the base for their activities, is filled with experimental and dynamic contemporary art, echoing the sound waves resonating within the studios.

The design and architecture of the RBMA headquarters were crafted by the team of world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma. The space, designed to provide musicians with opportunities for deep thought and collaboration, expresses the modern image of Tokyo while creating a contrast that evokes the warmth, natural delicacy, and tranquility inherent in traditional Japanese houses.

Furthermore, Kenji Kubota, a curator leading Tokyo's art scene, was invited to exhibit works by 20 artists, ranging from established domestic figures to emerging talents like Chim↑Pom, Hiroki Tsuda, and Akinori Mishima. This creates an art space distinct from a traditional museum. Additionally, on Saturday, November 1st, an Open House will be held, showcasing the special space created for RBMA to the public. We can experience firsthand the inspiration that young musicians receive.

Beyond the building, cool visuals and posters conveying the RBMA worldview have taken over Shibuya and the internet. These were created by Vostok, a design collective founded in 1993 by exhibition producer Yoshikazu Inui and editor Gabin Ito. Creators in all roles—art directors, graphic designers, programmers, video directors, producers, and editors—collaborate to bring various projects to life.

Among these, particular attention was drawn to the use of typical Japanese election posters as a canvas for artistic expression. Six Japanese artists who have influenced the music world were selected, and their "election posters," adorned with illustrations and impactful words, appeared in Shibuya and other central Tokyo locations.

With the Red Bull Music Academy in Tokyo reaching its halfway point, we look forward to seeing the achievements of the young artists, and we also turn our attention to the art that inspires them.
