Two Exhibitions Re-examining and Reconstructing Past Works
Nerhol is an artist unit formed by Yoshihisa Tanaka, who conceives ideas, and Ryuta Iida, who carves and excavates. Through participation in exhibitions both domestically and internationally, they continue to create works that strike at the heart of the vast cycles of consumption, creation, and oblivion. The duo, whose work is gaining increasing recognition worldwide, is currently based in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture.
"ATLAS" is on view at IMA gallery in Roppongi until November 30 (Sunday), and "Scenery, Scene" is being held at gallery EYE OF GYRE in Omotesando until November 20 (Thursday).
In "ATLAS," approximately 40 pieces are exhibited, which reconstruct past works and consolidate them into a new concept, presented in the form of a hardcover book. They face the subject and take 200 photos within a few minutes. By printing and layering all these photographs and then carving into them, they attempt to approach the essence of the subject. Nerhol comments on the exhibition: "We try to approach 'their' forms, but like water slipping through our fingers, 'they' recede from us. Just as the stories people have woven, the more they are written, the more they bring to the surface that which cannot be written."
Concurrently, "Scenery, Scene" is being held at EYE OF GYRE in Omotesando. Nerhol has created works through concise actions that strip away the temporal and superficial elements of photography as much as possible. They define these works, which transform the elements of their respective materials into substances far removed from their original components, stating, "Our current endeavor is to reconsider that materiality and construct a space that allows for a multifaceted interpretation of the other elements of the created works."
