ART | Acclaimed Artists Gather in Narita!

Directed by Artist Yusuke Shimura

Narita International Airport Becomes the Hub for New Contemporary Art Project 'Fuwa no Mori'

The contemporary art project 'Fuwa no Mori' has launched, centered around Japan's largest airport, Narita International Airport. This initiative will see prominent artists from Japan and abroad relocate their creative bases to Narita for an artist-in-residence program. The project aims to transform the surrounding Narita forest into a 'contemporary art forest,' radiating the latest in art to the world.

Architecture, Contemporary Art, and an Art Forest Connected to an International Airport

Introducing 'Fuwa no Mori,' Narita's first contemporary art project. The project is directed by Yusuke Shimura, an artist of Narita origin who is active internationally across photography, drawing, and interactive art. His character, 'Fuwari,' a galactic being, will be central to the project, transforming the skies of Narita.

A highlight of this project is the artist-in-residence program, which invites artists with international promise. Named 'FAIR,' this program will see featured artists stay in renovated vacant properties nestled within the rich natural landscape near the airport, as well as newly established ateliers. They will create works, sometimes in collaboration with local residents. The results of their residencies will be exhibited at the airport terminals, connecting the airport and the forest, and broadcasting to the world. This initiative will foster Narita as a creative and broadcasting hub leading up to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

Beyond this, the area will feature an art cafe and library renovated from a traditional Japanese house, a collaboration between Yusuke Shimura and Torafu Architects. A project to renovate a former gas station into a large studio is also planned, along with the construction of a major art museum. These developments promise to create spaces where visitors can appreciate beauty rooted in the local character. Furthermore, a skate rink project with 'Haiiro,' a unit including architect Makoto Tanijiri, is underway, with new architectural works incorporating Yusuke Shimura's vision being planned one after another.

First Invited Artist Announced: Rei Sato of Kaikai Kiki!

The first artist invited to the 'FAIR' artist-in-residence program has been decided. Rei Sato, affiliated with Takashi Murakami's Kaikai Kiki and known for her technique of overlaying drawings on her photographs, will be in residence from late October to late December, with an exhibition of her work planned for display at Narita International Airport terminals next year. To commemorate the opening of 'FAIR,' the Fuwa no Mori gallery will open its doors to the public for the first time on October 11 (Saturday), featuring an exhibition of works and artist talks with Yusuke Shimura, Rei Sato, and others.

'Fuwa no Mori' unfolds at the airport, amidst abundant nature. How this unique Narita environment will influence the art is something to watch with great anticipation.
