Alexander Gronsky Exhibition Now On
An exhibition by Alexander Gronsky, an Estonian landscape photographer who has garnered international attention for his work focusing on contemporary Russian landscapes, is being held at YUKA TSURUNO GALLERY until Saturday, October 25.
Text by WATANABE Reiko (OPENERS)
Talk Session and Book Signing Also Held on Saturday, October 4
After working as a press photographer in Russia and former Soviet regions from 1999, Alexander Gronsky began taking personal documentaries in 2008 and is now active as a landscape photographer. His work is characterized by its depiction of "boundaries" in every sense within a single photograph, capturing not only visual boundaries indicated by horizons but also various subtle boundaries such as the outskirts versus the city, socialist heritage infrastructure versus untouched nature, private versus public space, and life versus death.
The current exhibition at YUKA TSURUNO GALLERY features ten works from Gronsky's representative series: "less than one," "the edge," and "pastoral," primarily focusing on landscapes of the Russian outskirts.
"Less than one" (2006-2009) focuses on the sparsely populated remote regions of Russia with a population density of less than one person per square kilometer. "The edge" (2008-2009) examines snowy landscapes in the Moscow suburbs, characterized by many Soviet-era apartment buildings. The subsequent series, "Pastoral" (2008-2012), captures human activities in the intermediate zone between the metropolis of Moscow and the countryside.
To commemorate this exhibition, the latest monograph "Less Than One" is being published by TYCOON BOOKS. Furthermore, the artist will visit Japan on Saturday, October 4. A reception party, talk event, and book signing will be held in conjunction with the exhibitions Thomas Ruff "photograms" at TOLOT (Gallery Koyanagi) and Viviane Sassen "LEXICON" (G/P Gallery) during the same period. The Alexander Gronsky exhibition runs until Saturday, October 25.
