Transforming Nature and Daily Life into Stylish Art
Since winning the Grand Prize on NHK's "Digital Stadium" in 2001 for his video installation "Perspective of Playground Equipment," Yasuhito Suzuki has been active in various fields, including art and design. His "Leaf of Blinking," released in 2003, gained popularity not only in museums but also in many public spaces. In 2009, he received the Good Design Award for "Constellation of Departure" at Haneda Airport's "Port of Air," where he served as art director. Suzuki is an artist who makes his presence felt across a wide range of fields beyond contemporary art through his innovative ideas.
At the Setouchi Triennale 2010, his "Zipper Ship," which depicted a wake cutting through the sea surface as a zipper, garnered attention. The following year, at an exhibition held at the Hamamatsu Museum of Art, he presented "Flipbook Shopping Street," a project involving shopping streets and the city hall, demonstrating his continued engagement with regions, places, and spaces beyond the confines of museum galleries.
The exhibition "The Neighborhood Earth," currently on view at Art Tower Mito, features a collection of Suzuki's past and latest works. The exhibition's title, also a nickname for his representative work "Perspective of Playground Equipment," is based on his fundamental creative philosophy: to connect with something larger, the Earth, while remaining grounded in his immediate surroundings – his neighborhood.
Furthermore, "Flipbook Shopping Street in Mito" is being held in the city's shopping arcades. Suzuki has personally explored Mito's central urban area and created flipbook animations based on his unique observations, which are now displayed in various shops.
Yasuhito Suzuki possesses a keen sensibility that transforms overlooked everyday objects and natural phenomena into stylish artworks. Through his artistry, even our familiar Earth can be perceived as a more approachable and wondrous entity.
