Special Exhibitions Include "What is Japanese Photography?"
TOKYO PHOTO began in 2009 with the aim of creating a photography market in Japan that is connected to the global avant-garde, including Paris and New York. Over its past five iterations, it has grown into Asia's largest photo fair, attracting renowned art galleries from Japan and abroad.
The true appeal of this photo fair lies in the opportunity to view and purchase works by world-class artists firsthand. It has been held with the intention of allowing people to experience the joy of owning photographs, making photography art more accessible and integrated into daily life.
The sixth edition features two special exhibitions supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Part 1 of the "What is Japanese Photography?" exhibition showcases a collection of works by Japan's most representative photographers throughout history, examining Japanese photography's globally acclaimed status. Meanwhile, the "International Media Photo" exhibition presents outstanding editorial photography from print media such as prominent domestic and international magazines, offering a pioneering new concept that anticipates the evolving landscape of contemporary photography.
TOKYO PHOTO features prominent galleries and photographers from Japan and abroad. Notably, CAMERA WORK, a specialized photography art gallery based in Berlin, Germany, is exhibiting works by Herb Ritts, Peter Lindbergh, and Albert Watson, known for his Vogue cover shots and portrait of Steve Jobs. Approximately 15 other galleries from Japan and overseas are participating, showcasing works by Miki Ninagawa and Yoshihiro Ueda, curator at Gallery 916, as well as Masaru Tatsuki, known for his "Dekotora" series. A diverse array of unique works will be on display.
Director Tomohiro Harada commented on the highlights of "TOKYO PHOTO 2014": "This exhibition allows visitors to trace the history of Japanese photography, from contemporary photographers influenced by modern art and international photography, back to the photographers who shaped post-war Japanese photography. It is a historical exploration through Japanese photography, examining 'What does it mean to be Japanese?' and 'What was post-war Japan?' through the evolution of photographic techniques and changes in expression over time. The inspiration for this exhibition came from visiting Kinkaku-ji and then walking the Ryoan-ji garden in reverse. There is something to be seen when you view a landscape from a different perspective."
TOKYO PHOTO continues to showcase the ever-evolving world of art photography, both globally and within Japan. New encounters with photography await you this year.
