The Legendary Photographer Who Captured New York: World Premiere Works Also on Display
Saul Leiter was a leading fashion photographer in New York from the 1950s, but he retired from the commercial photography world in the 1980s and disappeared from the public eye. His work was brought back into the spotlight with the publication of a photobook by the German publisher Steidl in 2006. At 83 years old, Leiter's photographs sent shockwaves through the art world, leading to exhibitions and publications of his work worldwide. A documentary film, "In No Hurry: The Life and Times of Saul Leiter" (2012), was also released, offering those new to his work an opportunity to appreciate his brilliance.
Known as a "pioneer of color photography" for his innate sense of color, Leiter passed away with most of his approximately 80,000 color photographs and other works left unorganized. The Saul Leiter Foundation continues the ongoing "excavation" of his archive. This exhibition delves into lesser-known aspects of Leiter's life through numerous previously unpublished works, including world premiere pieces, and a wealth of archival materials unearthed from his vast collection, much of which was not fully explored in the previous exhibition.
