What is "Peak Oil"?

The theme of this solo exhibition, "Peak Oil," does not refer to a state of petroleum depletion, but rather to the point at which petroleum production reaches its zenith.

In 1987, Soviet Union petroleum production peaked. The American Reagan administration persuaded the Saudi Arabian government to dramatically increase oil production, causing global oil prices to fall by more than 60%. With declining petroleum production, the Soviet Union's foreign currency earnings were cut off. The communist society, stripped of its economic competitiveness, could no longer sustain itself on ideology alone, leading to the "Fall of the Berlin Wall" and the "Dissolution of the Soviet Union" two years later.

Humanity's "freedom and wealth" remain dependent on petroleum energy, and consumption continues to grow. Furthermore, society is being forced to make choices about an uncertain future, including "nuclear power," "renewable energy," "populism," and "war."

This solo exhibition symbolizes "humanity, which continues to waste energy resources while knowing they are finite," and "a society haunted by the specter of future energy resource scarcity."
