A Beautiful World of Love, Painted with Cynical Yet Sweetly Melancholy Hues
Alejandro Jodorowsky, director of 'El Topo' (1970) and 'The Holy Mountain' (1973), which captivated the world, and this year, his first new film in 23 years, 'Dance of Reality'has also been released in Japan. While known in his native France as a comic book author and for his work on Marcel Marceau's most famous mime performances, his talent as a painter is less recognized.
Though his work as a professional cartoonist has been known, he only began exhibiting his paintings in recent years. The catalyst was his wife, Pascale, who not only designed the costumes for 'Dance of Reality' but also excels in graphic art and spatial design. Pascale encouraged him after seeing his old sketches, saying, 'You should draw more.' This conversation sparked the unique style of their collaborative drawings.
This exhibition, the first opportunity to see their work in Japan, features pieces primarily from their 2012 presentation at the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris. By showcasing high-quality giclée prints, rather than originals, they have made the works accessible at a more affordable price point for fans.
The Jodorowskys share, 'Through drawing, we have come to know each other more deeply and love each other more.' Their paintings, depicting worlds of cruel cynicism and dreams with a bittersweet palette, represent their unique and beautiful world of love.
