Kazuhiko Washio Photography Exhibition "To the Sea" Opens
Kazuhiko Washio's photobook "To the Sea". From Tuesday, July 29th to Sunday, August 10th, his new exhibition "To the Sea" will be held at Roonee 247 Photography, a gallery located in Yotsuya, Shinjuku Ward.

Embracing What Is
Born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1967, photographer Kazuhiko Washio began his self-taught journey in photography in his late twenties. He has previously published the photobook "Far East Hotel" (Akashia), a collection of work on foreign travelers gathering at a guesthouse in Taito Ward, and a co-authored book "I Won't Blame Spring" (Chuo Koron Shinsho) with author Natsuki Ikenami, themed around the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The new exhibition "To the Sea" will showcase over 100 monochrome works, selected from photographs capturing the coastal landscapes of Japan, which Washio has been photographing for over a decade, and the people who inhabit them.
The exhibited works include scenes from Sagami Bay in Kanagawa Prefecture, where Washio himself lives, as well as coastal areas of the Tohoku region following the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011. However, rather than the specific landscapes being the subject, the photographs naturally capture the figures of people facing the sea and gazing at the horizon, perhaps suggesting the photographer's "gaze that embraces what is" as the central theme.
