The Tokyo Photographic Art Museum in Mita, Meguro Ward, has opened "Fiona Tan: A Poetry of Vision," a major solo exhibition by the Amsterdam-based video artist Fiona Tan. Screenings of Fiona Tan's Feature Films

Born in 1966 to a Chinese-Indonesian father and an Australian mother, Fiona Tan moved to Amsterdam in 1988, where she has since created a diverse body of work utilizing various media.

Her works, in particular, which use archival film and photographs as source material, often navigating the space between documentary and fiction, have garnered international acclaim for their delicate exploration of how cultural differences, both collective and individual, have been recorded and retained in human memory. Tan has also garnered attention in Japan, holding an exhibition at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, last year. Her works are periodically presented in Japan, and she has created many pieces with Japanese origins.

This exhibition marks Tan's first large-scale show in Tokyo. It features "Disorient," presented at the Dutch Pavilion of the 2009 Venice Biennale, where fiction and documentary coexist and different time-spaces intersect. Also on display are "Inventory," a portrait of the life, thoughts, and aesthetics of Sir John Soane, the British architect who collected diverse artifacts from various eras and backgrounds, and which is being shown in Asia for the first time.

Furthermore, the exhibition includes "May You Live in Interesting Times," in which Tan explores her own roots by traveling to China, Australia, Indonesia, and Hong Kong, alongside other new and representative works that incorporate fresh developments.

Fiona Tan poses poetic yet critical questions about the essence of photography and film. Her meticulous aesthetic sensibility and profound contemplation of images stir our hearts.
