ART | Gaudí and Takehiko Inoue: A Collaboration Beyond Time and Genre

ART | A Collaboration Across Time and Genre by Architect and Manga Artist

The Exhibition: Gaudí x Takehiko Inoue - Synchronized Sources of Creation

An exhibition where Antoni Gaudí, Spain's preeminent architect, and Takehiko Inoue, Japan's leading manga artist, achieve an unconventional collaboration. The exhibition, "Gaudí x Takehiko Inoue - Synchronized Sources of Creation," will be held from Saturday, July 12, to Sunday, September 7, at the Mori Arts Center Gallery in Roppongi.

Held as a special project commemorating the "400th Anniversary of Japan-Spain Exchange 2013-2014," the exhibition "Gaudí x Takehiko Inoue - Synchronized Sources of Creation" showcases the work of Gaudí, who was active primarily in the beautiful Mediterranean city of Barcelona during the 19th and 20th centuries. His legacy includes numerous original works, such as Sagrada Familia, which construction continues to this day since its commencement in 1882, as well as Park Güell and various residences, many of which are designated UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Meanwhile, Takehiko Inoue has created nationally beloved manga such as "SLAM DUNK" and "VAGABOND." His artistic endeavors extend beyond manga, with recent solo exhibitions and the creation of screen paintings depicting Shinran for Higashi Honganji Temple in Kyoto, demonstrating a wide-ranging artistic practice. His popularity extends overseas, and he was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the "400th Anniversary of Japan-Spain Exchange" last December.

The exhibition will present approximately 100 precious items from Gaudí's specialized institutions in Spain, including his original sketches and blueprints. Furthermore, Inoue, who stayed in Barcelona and set up his atelier in "Casa Milà," one of Gaudí's architectural works, will present Gaudí's life as a narrative. His new works, numbering around 40 pieces, will all be newly created, including sumi-e ink paintings on world-class handmade Japanese paper. The exhibition will also feature bold display spaces utilizing modern technology, such as a three-screen theater and projection mapping.

Inoue has interpreted Gaudí's world through his unique creativity and perspective, giving birth to new works. We look forward to witnessing the chemistry that unfolds from the collaboration between these two artists, transcending their respective eras and genres.
