Works Evoking the Tension Between Humanity and the Animal Kingdom
Stephanie Quayle was born in the UK in 1982. She grew up on a farm in the lush British countryside and graduated at the top of her class from the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art in the UK in 2005. She went on to earn a Master's degree from the Royal College of Art in the UK in 2007. She continues her creative practice from her home and studio on the farm.
Quayle's works, raw yet full of vitality, are born from her direct engagement with and deep understanding of the natural world, focusing on "animals" and their inherent nature. In Japan, she is also known for her elephant sculpture displayed on the first floor of Dover Street Market Ginza.
This exhibition presents ten sculptures and drawings that highlight the tension between humans and animals through the juxtaposition of wild, exotic creatures with familiar objects from our civilized world, such as books and chairs.
The animals created by Stephanie Quayle seem imbued with life, transcending mere representation. Her works invite us to question the boundaries of our own "animality."
