A Unique World Fusing Gold Leaf and Modern Printing Techniques

"Satoyama Jujo" celebrated its grand opening just this May. This hot spring resort, known for its "beautiful skin" waters from Osawazawa Onsen—said to be the finest hidden hot spring in Echigo—is helmed by Jyuroh Iwasa, formerly the editor of "Jiyujin" magazine, as creative director. It's a new type of accommodation where guests can savor exquisite organic cuisine and immerse themselves in the grand yet delicate spaces shaped by his aesthetic sensibilities.

The reception building of "Satoyama Jujo," renovated after being acquired from a soon-to-be-closed inn, is 150 years old. Fully renovated, the interior, surrounded by Niigata's characteristic thick, black beams and pillars, showcases a harmonious blend of designer furniture from around the world, including Denmark, and fine art such as sculptures and paintings.

For the "Satoyama Art Project," which kicks off with artist Shun Kawakami, works created specifically for this exhibition, utilizing gold leaf and made possible by modern printing technology, will be displayed. These pieces are placed in all 12 guest rooms, the restaurant, and various locations throughout the facility, gently accompanying and enhancing the beauty for guests.

Kawakami's unique worldview merges the aesthetic principles of Japanese culture, particularly from the Azuchi-Momoyama period, with graphic design that has evolved alongside digital technology since 2000. His works, which he terms "moden-classic," employ special gold and silver leaf papers produced by artisans at "Hakuichi," a long-established gold leaf maker in Kanazawa. Through special printing techniques, these pieces incorporate artificial-looking fading and signs of aging, resulting in a collection of prints that are nonetheless one-of-a-kind.

These artworks are also available for purchase. Immerse yourself in a unique art experience, native to the satoyama, where you can simultaneously enjoy the exhibited works, nature, and the surrounding space.
