CONDENSATION: Artists in Residence – At the Hermès Atelier
The Hermès Foundation launched its “Artists in Residence” program in 2010 for emerging artists. An exhibition showcasing the creative process and outcomes of this program, titled “CONDENSATION: artists in residence – At the Hermès Atelier,” is on view at Ginza Maison Hermès Forum until June 30 (Monday).

Works crafted with special materials like crystal, leather, silver, and silk on display
The “Artists in Residence” program is run by the Hermès Foundation, which aims to foster a connection between contemporary art and exceptional craftsmanship. Emerging artists, selected through recommendations from four internationally active mentor artists, spend three to four months in residence at the Hermès ateliers to create their work.
Over the past four years, sixteen young talents have undertaken residencies at various workshops, including those for leather, Saint-Louis crystal, and John Lobb. They received support from the Hermès Foundation in terms of technical skills, materials, and daily life, allowing them to experience superb craftsmanship and gain opportunities to create works using materials not easily accessible, such as crystal, special leathers, silver, and silk.
This exhibition, the first outside France to present works from the “Artists in Residence” program following its showing at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris last summer, features installations and sculptures by sixteen artists. Among them is Atsunobu Kohira, the sole Japanese participant in the residency.
These young artists, through their interactions with artisans and the privileged creative environment, have opened doors to new artistic adventures. We invite you to experience the fruits of their valuable residencies through their works.
