Boutiques transform into spaces for artistic communication

For over 110 years, Montblanc has led the way in "writing culture," fostering communication through the written word between people.

Currently, the art exhibition "MONTBLANC × The Chain Museum vol.3" is being held at the Montblanc Ginza Main Store.
The Chain Museum is a new project launched by Masamichi Toyama and PARTY, aiming to "create the next form of art." By combining business and technology, it continues to propose new relationships between art and humanity, transforming the connection between art and individuals.
Montblanc resonates with the activities of The Chain Museum and has hosted special exhibitions by four emerging young artists at its flagship store in Japan, the Montblanc Ginza Main Store, since March 2020.
For this third installment, works by Yuka Numata are on display.
Numata was born in 1992, into an era known as the digital native generation. In less than 20 to 30 years since the internet began to permeate daily life, she has been exposed to digital realms such as VR, hyper-realistic games, and 3DCG animation.
The theme for this exhibition is "Sampling Theorem."
Diverse data exchanged online, photos uploaded to social media, and advertisements. We live in an era where anyone can easily access "digital" images. But is interacting with "digital" images a "real" experience?
At first glance, her works appear to be digitally processed images, but they are actually created using iron beads as the material. They are meticulously crafted through painstaking manual labor.
The "Sampling Theorem" in the exhibition title is a theorem that quantitatively indicates how frequently sampling should be performed when converting an analog signal to a digital signal.
Through her work, Numata attempts to intervene with real physical actions into digitally rendered images. It is a challenge to blur the boundaries between the digital and the real.
The works are exhibited in the show window and on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the Montblanc Ginza Main Store.
They are also available to view online on "ArtSticker," an art community platform operated by The Chain Museum. Not only can you view detailed information about the works, but you can also purchase them, send direct support or comments to the artists, and communicate with them.
We encourage you to visit.
Yuka Numata
Born in 1992. She belongs to the digital native generation, for whom the internet has been an indispensable part of life since they can remember. In less than 20 to 30 years since the internet began to permeate daily life, two-dimensional spaces such as VR (virtual reality), games so realistic they are indistinguishable from reality, and ever-evolving 3DCG animation continue to expand. The virtual world is increasingly encroaching on the real world, becoming so seamless that the boundaries are blurred. In the coming years, will the concept of dimensions cease to exist, and will glitches and discrepancies that could not occur in contemporary daily life emerge within our living spaces? Her works are presented as installations, paintings, and other forms, using computer-processed images. Some of the materials used in her installations include iron beads, a children's toy. While employing analog expression methods, she incorporates them into digital image works by using techniques that create visual discrepancies akin to computer glitches. Her motifs include humans, food, cityscapes, and computer graphics—elements closely related to daily life—in an effort to evoke a sense of familiarity and déjà vu in viewers.
