Photographing During the Pandemic and Turning It into a Photo Book.

On April 7, 2020, a state of emergency was declared due to COVID-19. During this period, the city of Tokyo revealed a different face than usual. The terms 'self-restraint' and 'STAY HOME' highlighted the fact that the presence of people was once taken for granted. This is a valuable dialogue that looks back on Tokyo during the pandemic.

What were our actions like during the pandemic and the period of self-restraint? I tried to reflect on it. Like many others, unless there was something special, I mostly stayed home, repeating only the routines of shopping and walking.
As someone on the fringes of photography, I was taking pictures of the inside of my home and my neighborhood, which felt a bit removed from my own actions. To me, this felt like the 'best I could do' as a photographer at the time.

However, there were others who did not. They went out into the city to take photographs. Some might object to this behavior. But they are documentary photographers. This is undoubtedly the core and the urgency of the matter. As a minor photographer, I am filled with regret, but that's how it is for someone like me.

This talk show features two photographers, Ari Hatsuzawa and Tsuyoshi Jintsu, who photographed Tokyo during the pandemic and turned their work into photo books, alongside their editors, Jun Takeda and myself, Toru Kitahara. It promises to be a rare opportunity to openly discuss everything from the act of taking photographs to the process of publishing. The wide range of topics, from photographic theory from a photographer's perspective to editing theory from an editor's viewpoint, and even design theory, will surely be a highlight.

Although they share the same theme of "Tokyo Amidst the Pandemic," the approaches of these two individuals and their two books are entirely different. The underlying photographic theories and techniques. Furthermore, the process of compiling them into photo books. The approaches to editing and printing that were undertaken. All of this drama will be revealed this time!

Therefore, for OPENERS readers, this is expected to be an unmissable and unmiss-hear opportunity for photographic discussion. Whether you pick up the actual photo books at a bookstore or enjoy them online with a drink, this is a plan worth attending. We look forward to your participation.
