Text by WASEDA Kosaku (OPENERS)
170 Works, Over 300 Photographs Exhibited from 1975 to 2020
Fondation Louis Vuitton, which had been temporarily closed to prevent the spread of novel coronavirus infections, has announced its reopening on Wednesday, September 23.
Concurrently, it was also announced that the "Cindy Sherman Exhibition" would be held. Originally scheduled to open in April, the exhibition will now take place at a later date.
This marks the first exhibition dedicated to Cindy Sherman in France in 14 years.
The exhibition brings together 170 works from 1975 to 2020, offering a rare opportunity to see over 300 photographs in one place.
The works displayed across the exhibition space, which spans over 1,500 square meters, include "Untitled film stills," "Rear Screen Projections," "Fashion," "History Portraits," "Disasters," "Headshots," "Clowns," "Society Portraits," "Murals," and "Flappers," as well as a new series capturing men and couples.
This exhibition is held with the full cooperation of Cindy Sherman herself, and places particular emphasis on works from the early 2010s and previously unreleased pieces.
In parallel with this retrospective, a selection of works from the Fondation's collection, curated with Cindy Sherman's cooperation, will be exhibited under the title "Crossing Views."
The exhibition is organized across two floors, designed to resonate with the artworks. It focuses on portraits and interpretations using various approaches and media, including painting, photography, sculpture, video, and installation.
The exhibition will feature works by 20 artists, including French artists of diverse generations and backgrounds, as well as internationally acclaimed artists. Approximately 60 works are planned, many of which will be exhibited at the Fondation for the first time.
