This Year's Venue: Zojoji Temple, Steeped in Edo Charm

Launched in 2009, "TOKYO PHOTO" celebrates its fifth anniversary this year. For this edition, the venue moves to Zojoji Temple in Shiba, an area that retains the charm of the Edo period.

At the art fair, where photographic works are sold, top galleries from ten major cities worldwide, including Tokyo, New York, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, and Madrid, will be present. Visitors can view and purchase works by world-renowned photographers up close.

As a commemorative project, a special exhibition titled "Views from a Train Window," curated by Simon Baker, photo curator at the Tate Modern—a British national museum recognized for its significant role as a contemporary art museum—will also be held. This exhibition features a photographic convergence on the theme of streets by three artists: Daido Moriyama, who had a large-scale joint exhibition with William Klein at the Tate Modern last year; Joel Meyerowitz, renowned as a pioneer of new color photography; and John Divola, who captures the space between reality and fiction using his camera.

Additionally, a retrospective of the work of Shomei Tomatsu, who passed away last year and led the Japanese photography scene with his unique sensibility in expressing social themes such as U.S. military bases, Nagasaki, and Okinawa, will be presented. A photo exhibition titled "100 Children of Japan-China Future" will also be held concurrently.

Furthermore, William Klein, a photographer who captures cities with his unique methods, a fashion photographer for Vogue, and a film director active in a wide range of fields, will be featured. His 1964 series "Tokyo," depicting rapidly growing cities like New York and Rome, will be exhibited in Tokyo 50 years after its creation.

During the event, a cafe lounge, bar, and shop will be set up within the Zojoji Temple grounds, marking the renewed "TOKYO PHOTO 2013." Talk shows by curators and artists will also be held. The forefront of photographic culture is expected to provide significant inspiration.
