A Photobook Culminating the Series is Also Published
'BLAST' is Naoya Hatakeyama's solo exhibition, meaning 'explosion' or 'blasting.' Since its first presentation in 1995, this series has been exhibited internationally and is a representative body of work that Hatakeyama has continuously photographed.
This solo exhibition presents a new selection and arrangement, including previously unseen works. Through photographs taken in collaboration with blasting engineers who accurately predict the direction of rock fragments during explosions, the works invite a reconsideration of photography's appeal, delving down to the very fundamentals of its technique.
Furthermore, the video work 'TWENTY-FOUR BLASTS 2011,' presented at the major solo exhibition 'Natural Stories' held at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum in Autumn 2011 and subsequently toured to the Huis Marseille Museum for Photography in Amsterdam and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, will also be introduced as an editioned work. A much-anticipated photobook will also be published on August 20 (Tuesday) to coincide with this exhibition.
Great East Japan EarthquakeHatakeyama states that he was greatly affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, finding himself in a situation where he 'had no choice but to approach the creation of photographs with a different attitude than before.' What do the culminating works, created under such circumstances, ask of us?
