Born in 1963, Mirán Fukuda studied at Tokyo University of the Arts, located in Ueno. She has built her career primarily at The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, participating in and winning awards at numerous open call exhibitions held there, following her graduation and postgraduate exhibitions.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, which can be called her "home ground," has hosted many public exhibitions since its establishment in 1926. Following its renovation last spring, this exhibition of works by Fukuda, an artist with strong ties to the museum, was planned as the first solo exhibition by a living artist.

For this exhibition, she has created works that pay homage to Kunio Maekawa, the architect who designed The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, and works inspired by the museum's logo. Furthermore, she will exhibit pieces focusing on "Ueno," her place of origin, such as works related to Ueno Park and The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum.

Fukuda has also produced numerous works that cast a quiet gaze upon society, often taking contemporary events such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks as their subject. In this exhibition, visitors can also see works that seem to reflect the times, such as a series of four seasonal paintings created by the artist in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake, including "Autumn - Sorrowful Mother Kannon," which depicts a mother and child embracing against the backdrop of the disaster-stricken region as seen from above, inspired by the Edo-Meiji period painter Gakyo Kano's "Sorrowful Mother Kannon."Great East Japan Earthquakeof the disaster-stricken region as seen from above, inspired by the Edo-Meiji period painter Gakyo Kano's "Sorrowful Mother Kannon."

Gallery talks by curators will be held on Saturdays from July through September.

This exhibition showcases masterpieces from the 1990s onwards, inspired by famous paintings and artists from across time and space, such as Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" and Sōtarō Yasui, offering a comprehensive view of Fukuda's world. We encourage you to savor her representative works, which confront sorrow with sincerity while also bringing a fresh perspective to conventional notions of painting with their humor.
