A Collaborative Film Also on Display

Sarah Illenberger’s art breathes life into narratives, creating vivid and humorous imagery. Miho Kinomura discovered Illenberger’s first photobook, 'Sarah Illenberger,' released in 2011, and this encounter led to the realization of Illenberger’s first art exhibition in Japan at DIESEL ART GALLERY.

The exhibition features a collection of works that skillfully employ simple, everyday materials like fruits, vegetables, magazine clippings, textiles, and paper, showcasing a remarkable pop sensibility. Illenberger has consistently generated new perspectives by reinterpreting familiar objects and scenes from daily life with different materials—such as apples covered in fur, totem poles made of tires, knitted organs, and rain made of watermelon seeds.





The exhibition showcases Illenberger’s representative series, 'Strange Fruits,' alongside sculptural pieces, while also featuring a collaborative film shot by Kinomura in Berlin with Illenberger.

During the exhibition, limited edition merchandise including a photobook, mugs, tote bags, and postcards from the 'Strange Fruits' series will be available. Additionally, the 'Glorious Chain Café' on the first floor of DIESEL Shibuya will offer colorful and healthy smoothies inspired by 'Strange Fruits.'

We invite you to experience these fruits and vegetables transformed into pop art by Sarah Illenberger, making their debut in Japan. Anticipate the collaboration with Miho Kinomura, an artist active on the global stage.
