Featuring Frida Kahlo's First Public Showing in Japan and Yayoi Kusama's New Installation
In 2003, the Mori Art Museum held "HAPPINESS: Keys to the Art of Contentment" for its opening exhibition. For its 10th anniversary, the museum has chosen "love" as its theme, a universal concept that leads to happiness. This exhibition delves into the multifaceted nature of love through five sections: "What is Love?", "Lovers", "When Love is Lost", "Family and Love", and "Expanding Love." It presents masterpieces and new works from art history, spanning different eras and regions, to explore the complex and ever-changing aspects of love.
The exhibition includes Frida Kahlo's "My Grandparents, My Parents, and I (Family Tree)" and Francis Picabia's "Portrait of a Lover," both making their debut in Japan. Additionally, a new installation by Yayoi Kusama, who has consistently explored the theme of love, will be unveiled.
Furthermore, the exhibition presents diverse forms of love through works by Hatsune Miku, contemporary art stars like Sophie Calle and Zhang Xiaogang, as well as timeless masterpieces by Rodin and Chagall.
In today's world, where societal and religious values are undergoing significant shifts, the concept of love, along with traditional structures like nations, families, and gender relations, has also transformed. Yet, "love" remains a fundamental human theme, regardless of how the global landscape changes or how communication methods evolve. This exhibition invites contemplation on its diversity and potential.
