A Worldview Where Ominousness and Whimsy Coexist Captivates the Eye
Stickymonger, an artist born in South Korea, works with both digital and physical production methods, continuing her creative endeavors by incorporating a wide range of mediums such as vinyl stickers and acrylic paints.
Her work is characterized by its exploration of themes inspired by anime, delving into the interplay of darkness and light, the balance between innocence and fear, and the tension between femininity and anxiety. She has previously transformed physical spaces into eerie, dreamlike worlds inhabited by adolescent girls and strange creatures.
These unique sensibilities were cultivated through her childhood experiences. Growing up in a home adjacent to the gas station run by her family, Stickymonger would play in the shade behind gas tanks and gaze at her reflection in the black, oil-slicked puddles, constructing her own worlds in her imagination.
Her first gallery exhibition in Japan, "On a Clear Day," is now being held at Hidari Zingaro. Recently, she has been experimenting with spray paint as a medium, and this exhibition will feature her largest canvas painting to date.
What Stickymonger presents to the viewer is an "entrance to a world full of contradictions." It is a world that simultaneously entices with its allure and evokes a sense of foreboding, that delights while also bewildering and unsettling.
Within her bold worldview, one glimpses a delicate and unique inner landscape. This is an exhibition well worth visiting.
