A Unique World Expressed Through "Found Objects"

The first solo exhibition in Japan by Swedish artist Hans Andersson is being held at LOKO GALLERY. The artworks on display, and indeed all of his solo exhibitions to date, are untitled. Andersson intends for viewers to detach from words and their associated meanings, perceiving and interpreting the works in a realm beyond language. The exhibition runs from February 8 (Fri) to March 9 (Sat), 2019.

Delicate Details Born from Intuition

Artist Hans Andersson hails from Kalmar, Sweden. He has received numerous awards and grants, and his works are held in many collections in Sweden, Norway, Japan, and beyond.

This marks Andersson's first solo exhibition in Japan, held at LOKO GALLERY in Daikanyama, Tokyo.

For many years, he has primarily used found objects as his material to create abstract paintings and sculptures. He meticulously works on discarded items such as paper bags, plastics, metal scraps, and old photo albums found on the street, imbuing them with their own inherent meanings and histories. He gives new temporal dimensions to things once discarded, elevating them into artworks.

His works are characterized by delicate collages and drawings, yet he emphasizes that they are not logically constructed but rather follow intuition. He confronts materials without a clear plan, allowing himself, the artist, to evolve alongside the works and the creative environment. It can be described as both spontaneous and passive.

The artist, who cites influences from Zen philosophy, the philosophy of Kitaro Nishida, and the Mono-ha movement, stayed in Japan for several months in 2017. This exhibition features a monumental paper collage, four meters in length, created after gaining a new perspective during his time in Japan, alongside sculptures made from metal and leather.

The artworks on display, and indeed all of his solo exhibitions to date, are untitled. Andersson intends for viewers to detach from words and their associated meanings, perceiving and interpreting the works in a realm beyond language.

Regarding this exhibition, he stated, "Marcia Cavalcante, in 'Lovtal till intet' (Eulogy to Nothingness), writes that the true value of interpretation must be sought in the process of understanding itself, and that moments of discovery are the focus. For me, creating art is about becoming part of the process of understanding. It is an experience that occurs in this very moment, where it is always possible to encounter something for the first time. It is a form of de-creation, attempting to break away from past experiences that have captured the world. This is not to reject those experiences, but simply to consider them as not part of myself."

On the opening day of the exhibition, a talk by Andersson himself will be held. His words are anticipated to be as captivating as his art, which is both delicate and bold. We encourage you to visit.
