The spring season of the Setouchi Triennale 2013, 'Four Seasons of the Seto Inland Sea: Art and Islands,' an art festival that allows visitors to encounter island cultures and lifestyles, is being held until Sunday, April 21st, primarily on 12 islands in the Seto Inland Sea.

Collaborations Unique to the Art Festival, Including Nobuyoshi Araki x David Sylvian

The Setouchi Triennale, first held in 2010, established a new style of art festival where participants experience art integrated with the nature and culture of the islands while cruising the beautiful Seto Inland Sea by boat.

This second iteration expands the exhibition area. The addition of five islands in western Kagawa Prefecture enhances the diverse charm of the Setouchi islands. Furthermore, by dividing the festival period into three seasons—spring, summer, and autumn—visitors can enjoy art while experiencing the changing seasons.

This year, approximately 210 artists from 23 countries and regions are participating. Around 200 works, including permanent installations created in the past, will be exhibited. Notably, Shami Island, participating for the first time, features many spring-only exhibitions, making it an unmissable opportunity.

Additionally, at Uno Port, one of the departure points for island hopping, a 'Cityscape Photo Project' by photographer Nobuyoshi Araki and David Sylvian is underway. On Shodoshima Island, a sculpture created by Kenji Yanobe, based on a concept by Takeshi Kitano, is also exhibited, realizing collaborations unique to the Setouchi Triennale.

Just as ancient peoples conveyed new cultures and styles to the islands via the Seto Inland Sea, a major artery of transportation, this art festival brings new art to the islands. We hope you will fully enjoy this once-every-three-years opportunity to explore the finest 'museums'—the unique cultures and beautiful landscapes of each island.
